What is your book or favorite thing to read? Although Wilma used to read a lot, she has not read much since the stroke. Most of her reading takes place in the car and includes reading billboards, license plates, and company names on vehicles. Wilma is a regular attendee of the Aphasia Community Center, Inc. Reading Group, which meets twice a month.
What piece of advice would you offer to other people with aphasia? “Be involved!”
What is your favorite class or activity at the Aphasia Community Center, Inc.? “Lots of good ones. Amazing!”
What was your occupation? Wilma retired before her stroke. While in the workforce, she had 30 years of experience at the InterAmerican Development Bank, like a world bank, in downtown Washington, D.C.
Do you have any pets? Before Wilma moved to Florida, she had a yorkie-poo named Pepper. Pepper was an excellent dog and much loved.
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? “Chocolate, of course!”
What is your favorite place? “Beautiful place, France and Turkey. Really beautiful is Columbia.” While working, Wilma had the opportunity to visit Bolivia and another country in South America every two years.
Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
- Wilma’s native language is Spanish. She lived the first 22 years of her life in Bolivia.
- Wilma had a close friend, Seta, who taught her to cook. They used to make baklava, flan, and “oh-ho-ho” yogurt cookies. You must roll the dough out and pinch it to make the cookies. “It was beautiful!”
- Wilma and Steve, her husband, have two sons living in Virginia. Sean is the oldest son. Richard is younger and has twin girls who will graduate from high school this year.
