Aphasia Community Center Celebrates Fifth Anniversary

The Aphasia Community Center’s fifth anniversary celebration was attended by Center members, its dedicated volunteers, speech-language pathologists and board members. The celebration occurred between the Tuesday classes provided at the Center.

Founded in Sarasota in October 2018, the Aphasia Community Center serves adults with aphasia after stroke and their co-survivors. Its mission is to provide opportunities for communication in a supportive environment and reduce social isolation.  Aphasia, a communication disorder affecting language, is characterized by a loss of all or some ability to use words during speech, to understand words spoken by others, to read, and to write. Classes focus on maximizing strengths and are free to registered members. Resources are provided to those new to the aphasia journey. The Aphasia Community Center also promotes community public awareness of aphasia throughout the year.

Aphasia primarily affects adults after stroke, but it may also result from a traumatic brain injury or other underlying conditions causing damage to the brain. Two million people in the United States have aphasia.

The Aphasia Community Center is located on the Concordia Lutheran Church campus at 2185 Wood Street, Suite 5, in Sarasota. For more information or to become a member visit:
