Driver Evaluation and Rehabilitation Program

Driver Evaluation and Rehabilitation Program

Place: Sarasota Memorial Health Care Center, Outpatient Rehabilitation

Cost:  Assessment or Training is $100 per hour

Regaining or maintaining independent living is essential to those who are recovering from a physical illness, experiencing a decline in mental/cognitive abilities, or needing modifications. Patients and families are often challenged by knowing when or if it is safe to resume driving. Sarasota Memorial’s Driver Evaluation and Rehabilitation Program can help by providing a comprehensive driving assessment or retraining. The assessment is conducted by a licensed Physical Therapist trained as a driver rehabilitation specialist.

The assessment is a multi-step process:

In-clinic: Evaluates all the necessary individual driving skills, such as strength, flexibility, coordination, reflexes, visual skills, concentration, perception, memory, and basic driving knowledge.

Behind the wheel: This road test evaluates the ability to incorporate driving skills in real traffic situations. It is conducted in a facility-provided vehicle equipped with dual controls to ensure the safety of all occupants.

Re-Education: An alternative program for those who can improve their driving skills and return to independent driving. Vehicle modification training is required for those unable to access regular vehicle controls such as gas, brake, and steering.

A physician referral is required for admission to the program. This program is not covered by Medicare or insurance carriers.
