Why play games? Games aren’t just fun. Games also allow people with aphasia to practice reading, math, and socialization skills. Games can help restore lost skills, such as sequencing, numbers, reading, and executive reasoning. In addition, they can help with adaptation to aphasia and breaking through social isolation.
Of course, board games aren’t automatically Aphasia-friendly. At the Aphasia Community Center, we adapt the games to make them as Aphasia-friendly as possible. Adaptations may include using frames to hold cards or game pieces, having no time limits, and relaxing the rules. Everyone has different skill levels. Some of our favorite games at the Aphasia Community Center are listed below and target the skills in the heading.
